"When a mountain climber ascends toward the summit, the view he sees differs from that of someone who has already reached the top. In the Yoga Sutras, Patanjali offers us the perspective of one who has reached the peak, describing the view in order to encourage and guide climbers while sharing his panoramic vision. Reaching the summit can be accomplished only in stages, and therefore the sutras describe the stages in the development of yoga and the experiences a practitioner may encounter from the beginning of practice until one becomes firmly established in a permanent state of transcendental consciousness, samadhi.
The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are considered the most important text in the philosophy of yoga.
In his book Transcendental Yoga, Moti Shefi, a student of Maharishi Mahesh Yogi -who brought the technique of Transcendental Meditation (TM) to the world-presents a new translation and commentary on the sutras in the spirit of Maharishi.
Shefi translates the sutras from Sanskrit, sutra by sutra, explaining them both literally and conceptually. He also surveys the classic commentaries of Vyasa, Vachaspati Mishra, and Vijnanabhikshu.
In addition, the book discusses the ancient Indian roots of yoga in India's Vedic literature and provides practical guidance that can help anyone experience the state of yoga in everyday life and establish this experience in daily living.
