The Srikalahastisvara Temple, dating to the 7th century CE, is among the oldest and most important temples in India, especially in the South. Here, Siva manifested as the Vayu-linga (air element), granting salvation not only to humans but also to animals and other creatures. His consort, Gnanaprasunamba, bestows wisdom (jnana), while He grants life force (vayu). Since the 12th century CE, the Mrityunjayesvara shrine in the second prakara has been revered for remedies to planetary afflictions, making Srikalahasti a major site for worshipping Rahu and Ketu.

The Cholas, Vijayanagara rulers, and other dynasties enriched the temple through donations, lands, and festival endowments, fostering its architectural and economic growth. Renowned for its sculptures, paintings, and grand Sivaratri celebrations, the town also preserves traditional Kalamkari art, Kai-kal sarees, and wooden carvings.
